How to Read a Dean RA Pump Nameplate Before Ordering Parts

A Dean RA pump nameplate is useful. It is not always complete. On RA and RWA pumps, the data that usually decides parts and repair kits is the pump size/model and the actual impeller diameter. The serial number matters less than it does on many other industrial pumps.

This guide covers what to collect from the tag, why impeller trim can disagree with the stamped diameter, and how to verify what is actually in the pump before you order.

What matters on a Dean RA nameplate

Dean RA is an air-cooled centrifugal pump for heat transfer oil. The series has relatively few configurations. Within a given pump size, the bill of material is essentially the same except for impeller trim.

That changes how you read the tag:

Pump size / model Identifies the frame and hydraulic size (for example RA2096, RA3146, RA3186 and the listed size code). This is the primary identifier.
Impeller diameter Controls the curve and often the correct rotating-element kit. Prefer the actual measured diameter, not only the stamped value.

Other tag data Motor information, rotation, speed, and material notes help installation and match checks. Collect them. Do not let them replace size and impeller diameter.

Why the impeller diameter on the tag can be wrong

Many Dean RA pumps are purchased by OEM heater manufacturers. Those OEMs commonly order pumps with full-size impellers, then may trim the impeller later for the heater's duty point.

When the impeller is trimmed after shipment:

  • The impeller-diameter field on the Dean tag may be blank.
  • The tag may still imply the full-size diameter.
  • The OEM often does not restamp the tag after the trim.

Example: the nameplate may assume an 8.5 in impeller. Opening the casing can show a 7.5 in impeller.

This is common enough on Dean RA and RWA that the working rule is simple: whenever practical, physically verify the impeller diameter. Do not order a kit or rotating element from the stamped diameter alone if you have not confirmed the trim.

RA vs RWA on the nameplate

RA and RWA are both air-cooled Dean frames, but they are not the same service:

  • RA: heat transfer oil
  • RWA: hot water, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and triethylene glycol

Confirm the series from the tag and from the application fluid. Parts and kits are series- and size-specific. The same impeller-diameter verification rule applies to both RA and RWA.

Identification checklist

Collect this before ordering parts or a repair kit:

  1. Series: RA or RWA
  2. Pump size / model exactly as stamped (frame and size code)
  3. Impeller diameter from the tag, if present
  4. Actual impeller diameter measured or confirmed by opening the pump, when site procedure allows
  5. Photos: nameplate, full pump, suction and discharge flanges, and the impeller if the casing is opened
  6. Serial number for your record and for factory questions
  7. Operating fluid and approximate temperature (oil vs water/glycol; this confirms series selection)
  8. Motor nameplate if the driver is still on the set (hp, rpm, voltage, frame)

If the casing cannot be opened yet, say so when you order. Flag that the tag diameter has not been verified. On RA and RWA, an unverified diameter is a known risk.

Verifying impeller diameter safely

Opening a thermal fluid pump is a maintenance job, not a casual inspection.

Before any casing work:

  • Shut down the pump and driver under the site lockout/tagout procedure
  • Isolate suction and discharge valves
  • Allow the system and casing to cool
  • Depressurize and drain as required by the site procedure
  • Confirm the fluid, seal flush, and any heater interlocks are safe for opening
  • Do not work on a rotating or pressurized unit

Only then measure or confirm the impeller diameter. Record the measured value with the pump size/model. That pair is what parts selection usually needs.

If the pump cannot be opened until a shutdown window, do not invent a diameter. Use the tag as provisional data and plan the measurement for the outage.

How this affects parts and repair kits

Because the RA bill of material is largely common within a size except for impeller trim, the wrong diameter is the most common parts mismatch after a wrong size/model.

Consequences of trusting an unverified tag diameter:

  • Ordering a rotating-element kit sized for the stamped diameter when the installed impeller is trimmed
  • Mismatching hydraulic performance if a new impeller is ordered to the wrong diameter
  • Delay while the correct trim is identified after the first shipment is already in hand

Correct sequence:

  1. Confirm series (RA or RWA)
  2. Confirm pump size/model
  3. Confirm actual impeller diameter
  4. Then select the kit or parts

Frame differences still matter. Foot-mounted and centerline-mounted RA frames are not the same pump. Size codes such as 4x6x10 #1 and 4x6x10 #2 are not interchangeable. Size/model first; diameter second; never reverse that order.

What to send when you need a match

A useful inquiry includes:

  • Series and full size/model from the nameplate
  • Tag impeller diameter and, if known, measured impeller diameter
  • Clear photo of the nameplate
  • Note if the diameter has or has not been physically verified
  • Fluid and approximate operating temperature
  • Whether you need a repair kit, impeller, seal, bearings, or a complete pump
