Dean RA Series

Dean RA Series Air-Cooled Thermal Fluid Pumps

The Dean RA series is the air-cooled hot oil pump most thermal fluid loops actually run: a shaft-mounted fan, a finned frame, and no external cooling-water jacket. Factory ratings (Tusk) go to 6,000 GPM, 425 ft of head, 650°F (343°C), and 350 psig in ductile iron, across 27 sizes. We sell the three frames plants call us about, RA2096, RA3146, and RA3186, and we stock Dean pumps and OEM repair kits so a 2 a.m. seal or bearing failure is not a 12-week factory conversation.

Dean has been a metallic pump brand since 1869. The pumps are still built in Indianapolis at 6040 Guion Road. Since 31 March 2025 the brand sits under Tusk Industrial (May River acquired Dean, Fybroc, and Sethco from CECO). The name on the casing did not change the lead-time problem: Dean does not stock finished goods. Every factory pump is built to order.

Why air-cooled matters in a plant

A water-cooled hot oil pump does not just need a pump. It needs a cooling-water loop: supply, return, treatment, and a jacket or stuffing-box circuit that has to stay open. That loop is a utility cost on a good day and a failure mode on a bad one.

  • Utilities. Cooling water is not free. You pay for makeup, chemicals, and the piping that feeds the pump. Air-cooled RA dumps heat with a shaft-mounted fan across a finned bearing frame and seal chamber, so that loop is not part of the installation.
  • Freeze. Outdoor or unheated lines ice up in winter. A frozen jacket does not announce itself until the seal or bearings have already cooked. There is no jacket to winterize on an RA.
  • Scale and blockage. Jackets and small-bore cooling lines scale, plug, and starve flow. A blocked cooling line on a water-cooled pump is a fast path to a down unit. Air-cooled RA does not depend on that circuit.

That is the operating reason plants moved to fan-cooled thermal liquid pumps. It is also why you do not want to "make do" with a water pump and a jacket on a 600°F oil loop. RA is built for heat transfer oil. If you are on hot water or glycol, that is a different Dean series (RWA). See the FAQ.

Models we stock and sell

Tusk rates the RA family as a horizontal, air-cooled, centerline-mount, ductile-iron thermal liquid pump. On our store the working set is three configurators. RA3146 is the workhorse; most sizes on that page are in stock, and you should still call before you count on a specific trim. RA2096 is the compact foot-mounted economy frame. RA3186 is the largest centerline frame we sell online.

Numbers below are from the live product pages (29 Aug 2026) and Tusk. If a cell is blank, that number is not on the page.

Series envelope (Tusk, not a single SKU): up to 6,000 GPM, 425 ft, 650°F (343°C), 350 psig, ductile iron, 27 factory sizes. We do not publish per-model GPM or head here because those numbers are not on the three PDPs.

Catalog drift, so nobody gets surprised:

  1. Liquid. The RA2096 PDP says RA pumps are restricted to heat transfer oils. Tusk's RA page also mentions water. If the liquid is hot water, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, or triethylene glycol, Dean's answer is RWA, not RA. Do not put water or glycol in an RA because a catalog sentence was loose.
  2. Mounting. Tusk describes RA as centerline mount. That matches RA3146 and RA3186. RA2096 is foot-mounted on purpose. Do not assume every RA sits on a yoke.
  3. Size count. 3 + 14 + 8 = 25 sizes on our three PDPs. Tusk lists 27 factory sizes. Additional factory sizes exist. Call for a quote. We will not link a size that is not a live cart SKU.
  4. RA3146 11.5 in. Those five sizes are on the pump PDP. The live repair kits we sell cover 8.5 in and 10 in (including 4x6x10 #2). If you are on an 11.5 in RA3146, call before you assume a kit SKU.
  5. 4x6x10 #1 vs #2. RA3186 4x6x10 #1 is not the same frame as RA3146 4x6x10 #2. The #1 bearing frame is a separate part. Do not mix kits.
  6. Lead time strings. Factory Dean is build-to-order (typically 6-8 weeks, past 12 when the shop is behind). That is why we stock. The 4-5 week note on RA2096 and the 6-8 week note on RA3186 are what those PDPs say today. RA3146 is the frame with "most sizes in stock." Call 888-341-7085 for the unit you need.

Prices move with impeller trim, baseplate, motor, coupling, and rebalance. The starting number is the bare-pump "Now" price on each PDP. Use the configurator, or send us the tag.

Parts and repair kits

When an RA comes down, the usual path is not a new pump. It is a rotating-element rebuild: shaft, mechanical seal, bearings, grease/oil seals, snap rings, gaskets. You can buy that piecemeal from Dean Pump Parts (we list bearing frames, fans, glands, gaskets, and the rest). Or you buy the kit Dean already stacked for that frame.

The kit is the faster job. On RA3146, the shaft ships with the mechanical seal, gland, seal collar, thrust bearings (greased, locknut and washer on), inboard grease seal, and snap rings already on the shaft. Loose in the box: radial carbon bearing cartridge, end-cover O-ring, outboard grease seal, casing gasket. You are not hunting eight line items at 2 a.m., and you are not guessing seal setting. Dean's own kit copy is blunt about cost: the kit is cheaper than buying the pieces one at a time.

Kit SKU Fits (from the kit PDP) Price (29 Aug 2026) Ship note on the PDP
RA2096 6" 6138153 1x1.5x6 and 1.5x3x6 only $3,161.13 Typically ships in 24-48 hours
RA2096 8" 6138154 1x1.5x8 only $3,161.13 Typically ships in 24-48 hours
RA3146 8.5" 6138148 1x3x8.5, 1.5x3x8.5, 2x3x8.5, 3x4x8.5, 4x6x8.5 $4,667.34 Typically ships same day if ordered before 2 p.m. EST
RA3146 10" 6138149 1.5x3x10, 2x3x10, 3x4x10, 4x6x10 #2 $4,698.35 Typically ships same day if ordered before 2 p.m. EST
RA3186 6138171 RA3186 series (kit PDP does not split sizes) $13,779.45 No same-day string on that PDP; call

RA2096 and RA3186 kits are also pre-assembled (shaft, seal, bearings, seals, gaskets; RA3186 also lists gland, snap rings, and O-rings). Match the kit to the impeller diameter and, on 4x6x10, to #1 vs #2.

If you only need a gasket, a fan, or a bearing frame, buy the piece. If the pump has a cooked seal and bearings, buy the kit. That is the difference between a shift-length repair and a parts-chasing week.

Lead time: factory build-to-order vs. what is on the shelf

Dean does not warehouse finished RA pumps. Factory product is built to order. On a clean run that is 6 to 8 weeks. When Indianapolis is behind, it runs past 12. That is fine for a capital project. It is not fine when the heater is down and production is waiting.

That is the gap we stock against. We hold Dean pumps and Dean parts so the conversation can be "what is on the tag, and what do we have" instead of "we will get you a lead time." RA3146 is the frame with most sizes in stock. Kits for the 8.5 in and 10 in RA3146 typically ship the same day if you order before 2 p.m. Eastern. RA2096 kits typically ship in 24-48 hours.

None of that is a promise that a specific serial-number match is on the shelf this afternoon. Call. We check inventory and move.

FAQ

RA or RWA?

RA is the hot-oil / heat-transfer-oil series (650°F / 343°C, up to 6,000 GPM, 350 psig, 27 sizes, ductile iron). RWA is the air-cooled series Dean built for hot water, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and triethylene glycol (Tusk: 400°F / 205°C, up to 1,100 GPM, 450 psig, 13 sizes). RA2096 copy restricts RA to heat transfer oils. If the loop is boiler water, condensate, HVAC, or glycol, look at RWA (we sell RWA4166 and others), not RA.

Does RA need cooling water?

No. The series is air-cooled. A shaft-mounted fan and finned frame take heat off the bearing housing and seal chamber. You still need a correctly specified mechanical seal and the right fluid in the pump. You do not need a cooling-water hookup to run the frame.

Do you have sizes besides RA2096, RA3146, and RA3186?

Tusk lists 27 factory sizes. Our cart has the three frames above (25 listed size codes). If your tag is a factory size we do not show as a live product, call for a quote. We will not post a dead product link.

Can I drop an RA3146 in for an R4140, or an RA3186 in for an R450?

The RA3146 PDP says it is dimensionally interchangeable with the R4140 series. The RA3186 PDP says the same for R450. RA2096 is dimensionally interchangeable with small ANSI B73.1 pumps. That is envelope and piping, not a blanket "any option, any impeller, any seal." Send the tag, the curve, and the fluid.

Should we buy a spare pump or a spare kit?

If the heater is a single-pump critical loop and factory lead time is 6 to 12 weeks, a spare pump is the honest conversation. If you can pull a back-pull-out rotating assembly and you want the unit back in hours, keep the matching kit on your shelf or count on ours. A lot of plants should do both. We can walk that through against the tag.
